You're NOT alone!

If you’re suffering from depression, don’t think that you are alone! One in five people suffer from depression at some point in their lives and right now in the UK nearly 80,000 young people are feeling the effects of severe depression.

What's the difference between feeling sad and being depressed?

Everyone goes through ups and downs during their teenage years and many will occasionally feel down and upset about things going on in their lives, this is completely normal. But sometimes people feel extremely sad, worthless and lonely for a long period of time, so much so that it can affect their day to day lives significantly, stopping them from doing things they would normally do or from wanting to see anybody, including close friends and family. This is depression.

Depression usually starts as a reaction to something in a person’s life such as a loss of family member or close friend, bullying or abuse, it could also be that the person is extremely stressed and doesn’t think they have support or it could even be caused by genetic factors.

There are many signs that someone is depressed for example:

  •          Having trouble sleeping or sleeping more than normal
  •          Eating more or less than normal
  •          Feeling tired and energy sapped
  •          Not wanting to see friends or family
  •          Not wanting to take part in activities they previously enjoyed
  •          Avoiding social situations
  •          Feeling lonely and miserable
  •          Being very self critical
  •          Possibly wanting to self harm
  •          Feeling upset, hopeless and irritable

Talk to someone...

If you think you are feeling depressed the best thing you can do is to talk to someone, either a family member, close friend, teacher, GP or helpline. These people want to help you and want you to feel better.  Talking about how you feel can often make you feel like a weight is lifted off your shoulders.

If you don’t want to talk to a close family member, teacher or friend then it’s okay to go and see your GP, this will be confidential so no one else has to find out how you’re feeling and they can help feel better through a variety of different methods. Savvy Kernow approved services will always treat you with confidentiality and the respect and dignity you deserve.

Whatever you do – Don’t suffer in silence! Keeping your feelings locked up will only make you feel worse and weigh you down.
