"It's time to stop sweeping mental health issues under the carpet"
Date: 11 Jan 2016
It is time “to stop sweeping mental health issues under the carpet and end the “shame and embarrassment” of those living with mental health issues the Prime Minister will state today as part of an announcement of new investment of almost one billion pounds to be put into mental health services.
The investment is targeted towards teenagers and new mums and will look to ‘transform’ mental health services around the country.
As part of the process a new waiting time target to help teenagers dealing with eating disorders has been created along with the promise to improve waiting times for young people experiencing psychosis.
The PM will go on to say that: "We need to take away that shame, that embarrassment, let people know that they're not in this alone, that when the clouds descend, they don't have to suffer silently.
"I want us to be able to say to anyone who is struggling, 'talk to someone, ask your doctor for help and we will always be there to support you’."
This new investment will hopefully help to tackle the inequalities between the way people treat mental and physical health, and bring an end to the stigma surrounding it.
Mental health issues affect 1 in 4 of us, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of!
